Cool Javascript Tools

Posted by Dave Minor Wed, 09 Nov 2005 20:34:11 GMT

I’ve never been a big fan of Javascript or doing stuff client-side, but JS seems to be coming into it’s own with the development of some great JS/AJAX frameworks like Prototype and script.aculo.us.

So I’m drawn to add more Web 2.0 elements into my projects lately—which is not a bad thing I think.

Today, while thinking of trying out the new version of Camino, Doug pointed me to some really cool Javascript development tools. These are really amazing and will allow me to 1) get rid of my developer’s toolbar in Firefox that takes up screen real estate and 2) allow me to use Camino and still have DOM tools available.

Doug reports slayeroffice’s tools a little buggy in Camino, but they do work.

Rotten Weather

Posted by Dave Minor Mon, 07 Nov 2005 15:43:37 GMT

First SoloHere’s a picture from my first solo.

The weather lately has not been kind to me. I was supposed to have done my first cross-country flight last Thursday, but the winds were really high making things very turbulent. We stayed in the pattern and did some really rough crosswind landings instead. The winds stayed high all weekend.

This morning when I got up it was beautiful—calm winds and clear skies. By 0800 there was a ceiling at 1200 and we were boxed in. Hopefully it will clear off later and we can go.

Faster Tests!

Posted by Dave Minor Mon, 31 Oct 2005 18:19:00 GMT

Last week I went through a process to get fink off my powerbook and in the process, installed Rails 0.14.2 and MySQL 4.1.15. So today, to take advantage of the better test performance, I upgraded the mysql gem to 2.7 to get the latest native bindings.

$ gem update mysql -- --with-mysql-config

Note: This is for OS X 10.3.9 with mysql and ruby from DarwinPorts.

The great news is that it worked! My rake has gone from 3 min. 40-ish seconds to 2 minutes 40-ish seconds. Gotta love that!

Solo!

Posted by Dave Minor Tue, 25 Oct 2005 17:53:01 GMT

I completed my first solo flight this morning! It was a beautiful morning with light winds. 3 takeoffs and full stop landings. Of course, as expected, as soon as I got in the air, traffic in the area started coming in. Not slow traffic that would just meld in with me, but fast planes using the other runway, so I had to do some maneuvering to get out of their way. Between that and the life flight chopper at the hospital, things were pretty active. Lot’s of fun. Can’t wait for the next leg of my training.

X-Wind Landings

Posted by Dave Minor Thu, 20 Oct 2005 19:23:43 GMT

Bumpy day today. I was hoping to work on smoothing out my touchdown, but the winds were ripe for practicing crosswind landings - quite the different beast. I still smoked the last one! :)

On My Way Up

Posted by Dave Minor Thu, 20 Oct 2005 14:19:32 GMT

I mentioned at the beginning of last year that Sarah has given her blessing for me to pursue my pilot’s license. I began that full swing in October. I’ve logged around 8 hours so far most of those last week. The airport is only about 10 minutes from our house, so it’s easy to get to.

Anyway, I’m going to keep a running log of important events that happen along the way here. I also want to create an app (probably in rails) that is basically an online pilot log. Then have a script that includes my log stats at the end of each flying blog entry.

The Real Reason the White Sox made the World Series

Posted by Dave Minor Thu, 20 Oct 2005 13:56:25 GMT

I left town. That’s right, we picked up the family and headed south. I’m not sure of the impact that really had on the Sox, but I have to think it probably had some effect.

Back in the spring, we both (Sarah has felt this way for a long time) felt a strong urge to move closer to family. Settling into a groove in Chicago for 9 more years would have been fine, except that the kids would not want to move as teenagers probably. Sarah found a great job in Hot Springs, AR, we found a great house and moved down in August. Hot Springs is a really neat town and we love it here so far. Having my folks 20 minutes away is great too!

During this process, we were shocked to find out we’re expecting our third child! So come first week or so of November, I’ll be increasing my tax exemption status! We’re excited and glad to be closer to family during this time.

The other news of the year is that I’ve moved away from PHP development and embraced Ruby on Rails as a framework to do agile web apps. This is cool for a couple of reasons. 1) Have you seen RoR in action?? and 2) This is a unified environment that Doug and I can both agree on for doing development together. He’s definitely still the smarter one, but it’s nice to have a common plane to develop on.

Old, New, Borrowed, Blue

Posted by Dave Minor Thu, 20 Oct 2005 04:41:13 GMT

Well, I’m trying to get back into blogging. Oh, it’s always been there, I just got frustrated with my posting method and it discouraged me to the point where I just didn’t want to post any longer. My apologies.

So, I’ve switched the blogging engine to use Typo which is a Ruby on Rails app. It’s a sweet blogging engine! Check it out.

I’ve imported all the old entries into Typo. If you see anything that doesn’t look right, post a comment (btw, comments are working now).

Hmm, that takes care of Old and New. Borrowed and Blue, I guess, are the fact that I borrowed Typo’s default layout and added my orange and blue theme to it.

Lots and lots of stuff has been going on personally and work-wise this year. I need to update things around here, but I want to get this out. Look for more news very soon. Leave me a note! Thanks.

Stay Out of My Hair

Posted by dminor Mon, 13 Jun 2005 17:47:00 GMT

My 5 year old doesn’t want to go to his sitter’s house today. He seems to want some time to play around the house without his older brother telling him how he can/cannot play. I told him that as long as he stayed out of my hair, he could stay at home today. Within 5 minutes, he was in my office pulling things off the fax machine, asking questions, and generally interrupting.

I said to him, “What was the one thing I said you had to do to be able to stay home today?”

“Not mess up your hair,” he responded.

Comments Turned Off

Posted by dminor Tue, 15 Mar 2005 01:58:00 GMT

I have turned comments off due to blogspam. Grrr! Until I have time to deal with it, you’ll have to email important comments. Sorry. Kill the spammers.

UPDATE: Now that I’ve updated my blogging engine to Typo, I’m turning comments back on. All old comments are gone however.
