Parking Around Back

Posted by Dave Minor Sun, 29 Jan 2006 04:19:15 GMT

car against house Yesterday, we had a new parking space created near the side of our house. Our car rolled down the hill coming to rest against the side of the house but not before trampling into the gas meter and the two air conditioning compressors.

Thankfully no one was hurt, but it did take the gas company 2 hours to find a main and cut it off, meanwhile, natural gas was pouring out underneath the car with a large hiss. When they eventually got the backhoe to dig huge holes in my yard looking for the main, they cut the cable and telephone lines.

No wall damage to the house. The car isn’t running great, but I’m not sure why or what yet. We’ll have to have a new gas meter, new plumbing to and from the meter, and some sort of repair or replacement to the AC units.

We are staying with my folks last night and tonight. Some friends have offered the use of a condo on the lake for the rest of the week until we can get repairs made and gas restored.

Here are some pics to soothe your curious mind:

Triumphant and Shaken

Posted by dminor Fri, 24 Oct 2003 23:28:00 GMT

I crossed the border today. It no longer verges on war. War has begun.

Squirrels keep eating through the wood on my house and living inside. To make matters worse, they are very aggressive and vocal about the fact that I’m coming near “their” front porch. I don’t like it. I read that there is not much I can do except trap them. My Grandmother has been a squirrel-hunter for several years—trapping and drowning the things!

I went out the front door to get the mail today and one was on the front porch. He didn’t jump for the ground or the trees. He jumped onto the porch and ran behind a box that was propped against the house. I kicked the box, shoving it against the house again and again. I won’t go into a lot of the details, but there was a distinctive moment when he knew that the fight was over. He let out a loud repeating scream that caused squirrels in the surrounding trees to begin heckling me. He was pretty still after that, but not dead yet. I used a board to finish the job. The surrounding squirrels continued to reprimand me.

I’m left with a dead squirrel, blood on my porch, house and a box I’m supposed to return to this bedding company, and the unknown of Squirrel Retaliation or Successful Homeland Defense.

What about hanging the dead carcass on a post in the front yard as a warning to the squirrels? My neighbors probably wouldn’t mind.

Spring Cleaning

Posted by dminor Sat, 26 Jul 2003 04:53:00 GMT

It’s a little late, but I broke down and hired someone to clean the house today. It hadn’t had a good cleaning since we moved in, and when we did find time to “clean”, it was more like picking up and reorganizing the junk that hadn’t been unpacked yet.

This gave us the opportunity and the motivation to get most of that stuff put away and then let someone else do the scrubbing! It looks great and was well worth the cost. Thanks Tiffany!

While this was going on, Wally the tree guy came with his crew and took out a tree that was ready to fall on the swingset. whew! He also trimmed quite a few more and was very clean and quick.

So, some money spent, but a good cleaning, in and out today.

Neighborly Gift

Posted by dminor Mon, 07 Jul 2003 15:00:00 GMT

We just moved into a new house 2 months ago. I say “new,” it was actually built in 1916, but it’s new to us. Our neighbor to the East have a beautiful house and yard. They work really hard on it.

During the night July 4, we endured severe thunderstorms from 3 to 6 a.m. It was an impressive lightning and wind show, however one of our very large trees next to the house split and fell into our neighbor’s yard. To complicate matters, it didn’t come all the way down, it lodged itself against one of their trees about 30 feet up and stopped.

I was going to call some tree services this morning to see how much it would cost to remove the beast, but nature took it’s toll before I could get the phonebook. Another strong thunderstorm came through this morning, and as I sat at the kitchen table, it gave out a couple of warning cracks, snapped off the top of the neighbor’s tree and came crashing to the ground.

Wish I had a fireplace …
